About the Play - Notes from the playwright
A friend called me up one night and jokingly suggested that I write a short one act play about a Latina who will not date White men. I set off to write a ten minute comedic skit. But, I couldn't just write about one Latina an island onto herself. I had to give her a familia. So, it seemed logical to begin writing four declarations by three Latinas and their White sister (to help complicate matters a bit) who made no apologies for their decision to date only men of color. The declarations, however, weren't enough to thread these four women intimately to one another. I wanted to know more about them, needed to hear their voice, intention. I needed to feel their individual sense of community, higher power in their endeavors to make change happen.
"What do you get when you put a Muslim, a Jew, and an immigration attorney in charge of raising the political consciousness of their community?"
Three flawed but courageous Latinas and their White sister extend their efforts to build community. They share with us their triumphs and struggles with race, sex, politics, and religion as they seek voice and light.
